Red 5 de Diciembre is an agronomy network under the umbrella of the Reflejo Cooperative. Their opt-in structure delivers additional training and separation to over 1,300 smallholder farmers across the indigenous highlands of Oaxaca, separated into 13 first-level groups. The group in La Canada is headed by Obemar. Crop to Cup’s strategy for building relationships and trust within these communities has been to work with field agronomists. First, by following the best students of the legendary Maestro Lucino, who trained legions of coffee agronomists at the University of Chapingo (this is how we met Obemar and the group behind Red 5 de Diciembre). The 5 de Diciembre is a network of agronomists and producers who opt-in to receive training, pool resources and learning. They operate under the umbrella of the Reflejo Cooperative and, since 2020, have provided training for, and access to, the tightest of communities located in the highest reaches of Oaxaca.
