"Well before Red Fox was born, Incahuasi was the first coop in Peru from which Aleco ever bought coffee, and his experience with the region and its unique terrain and offerings led to his certainty that Peru was the best investment a coffee buyer could make.
While the coffees produced by Cusco’s Incahuasi Valley in southern Peru have always been stellar, their remoteness and inaccessibility, as well as other political factors, kept them off the specialty market until recent history. Until relatively recently, a now-defunct cooperative union dominated the region, making it difficult to work within our model of investment and paying smallholders fair wages; when the union dissolved, we were able to go back to Incahuasi and the larger region of Cusco and reinvest in what we’ve always known to be a truly unique origin. Under the excellent leadership of Claudio Ortiz, the coop is thriving and has become our biggest coffee provider in Peru this year, offering high elevations and dry climatic conditions that yield ripe yellow fruit like peach, mango, and brown sugar, as well as excellent mouthfeel and sweetness.
More and more, we see Incahuasi investing profits back into infrastructure and growth, and when we’re out in the field talking to producers, their respect for and positivity towards Claudio is unmistakable. While this region is notoriously difficult to traverse, with each trip involving several flights, dozens of hours in the car, and challenging hikes to get into and out of the producing valleys, the quality and the people make it more than worth the effort. Despite—or perhaps because of—the inherent challenges that come along with sourcing coffee from Incahuasi, no region better represents Red Fox’s mission and values, and we look forward to seeing what the future has in store."
